Chapter Sixteen
Helena
The entire neighborhood got together and cast a protective barrier on the town to block out all the wizards who might cause us trouble.
We just kept working. It felt weird when so much was going on, but normal life continued, no matter what else happened. We still had to eat, so we still had to work. We got the upstairs cleared out and then moved on to the grotto. This was a hard space to work with, just because it was unconventional. It was also cave-like, the only windows being the wall of glass that faced the backyard, and the rock walls swallowed all the light.
âI hate the kitchen down here,â Graham said. âI donât know what Iâm talking about, but doesnât it seem like the kitchen should be as unique as the rest of the room?â
âYouâre not wrong,â I said. âMaybe something kinda funky. Like an island with a curved, space-age marble top.â
âOr maybe it should have a stone motif to match the rest,â Billie said, but she seemed uncertain.
âNo. No more Flintstones,â Jake said. âThis house has enough rock already.â
âItâs also too dark,â Jasper said. âThis is where we do white,â
âI want to open it up a little too,â I said. âTake out this wall of cabinets here. It juts out stupidly. And maybe swap out some of the other cabinetry for open shelves. And itâs a wizardâs workroom, so big double sink.â
âSounds good. We can hash out the specific layout tonight.â
We must have spent a whole hour just trying to figure out how to fit a third bedroom in there, but in the end, nothing seemed right. No matter what we did, the third bedroom would be sunless and damp, or it would require building out. The backyard was large enough to support that, but it would throw off the whole profile of the house.
âThe best idea would be a small guest house,â Jasper said. âThen, if the main house could be purchased by a couple with a kid or an elderly parent, but you still have a guest room or office.â
âBuild a whole guest house?â Billie said. âOoh, can I decorate it?â
âItâll need a bathroom,â I said.
âJust a wizard bathroom,â Jake said. âSoâ¦off-grid. Composting toilet.â
âA house like that isnât going to be bought by the composting toilet crowdâ¦â I said. âThatâs your wolf brain talking.â
âOkay, okay, Baroness, so we run plumbing. I guess we might as well take the time, because weâre under house arrest by a geriatric homeownerâs association.â
âHave you built structures from scratch?â I asked.
âOh, yeah. Extensions, garagesâ¦â
âCool. So you can teach me,â I said.
âMy pleasure,â Jake said. âThere are so many things it would be my pleasure to teach you, I hardly know where to beginâ¦â
âMaybe Iâll teach you a few things myself,â I said.
âWhat sort of things?â
The Sullivan brothers had more knowledge on houses than me, and more sexual experience too, but⦠âHow to zap Piers in the balls,â I said. âAnd maybe how to waltz with a Baroness.â
âIâm game.â
âReally? Even the dancing?â
âSure.
